Man burned in morning blaze
A 55-year-old Federal Way man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Feb. 22 after he caught fire and suffered serious burns as a result of a house fire. The blaze began around 2:45 a.m. at a residence on 8th Avenue South and South 293rd Street in Federal Way.
Neighbors attempted to extinguish the flames by attacking the man with water. Upon their arrival, South King Fire and Rescue firefighters found the man in the backyard of the residence.
Firefighters fought the fire for approximately 30 minutes before containing it. During that time, the roof of the house collapsed. The fire’s cause is still under investigation, but it is believed to have begun in the garage.

Suspects in shooting
Federal Way police officers found two 16-year-old juvenile males wounded by gunshots when officers responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 3:45 p.m. Feb. 24 in the area of South 288th Street and Military Road South, said police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock.
The two males were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in stable condition. They have since been released.
A passerby reported the shots as well as four to five fleeing juveniles, Schrock said.
Witnesses also reported that 10 to 15 juveniles were fighting at the location before police arrived.
A 16-year-old male suspect identified as the shooter in this case turned himself in Feb. 25, according to police reports. His identity was not available at press time, and will be released after charges have been filed with the King County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. The weapon used in the crime has not been recovered, reports said.

Police hire interim PIO
The Federal Way Police Department has a new public information officer.
Cathy Schrock began her duties as interim PIO on Feb. 21. She replaces Stacy Flores, who worked with the Federal Way Police Department for five years.
Flores also worked in the crime prevention unit. She will begin her new job March 3 as the public information officer for Tacoma Public Schools.
