Know about this fatal hit-and-run March 1? Federal Way PD wants your help

Robert Spafford, a Navy veteran, was struck and killed that evening on Pacific Highway.

The Federal Way Police Department is looking for help from the community to solve a case from March 1 in which a motorist struck and killed a pedestrian, then sped off.

The collision occurred minutes before 6 p.m. in front of a veteran’s housing complex near 29400 Pacific Highway South. Police and fire personnel rendered aid upon arrival, but the pedestrian, 54-year-old Navy veteran Robert L. Spafford, died at the scene.

According to police, the investigation so far indicates Spafford was not in a crosswalk or crossing at an intersection when he was struck. The driver did not stop and fled the area after the collision.

The vehicle in the collision appears to be a 2003 to 2005 full-sized gray Dodge Ram pickup with a broken rear center window, a matching color hard-top bed cover, and faded paint on the sides of the tailgate. Post-collision, the pickup had lost its passenger’s side rear-view mirror.

Police also suspect the occupants in the vehicle to have been involved in a shoplift at Dick’s Sporting Goods in The Commons mall prior to the collision. They have not yet been identified.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or its occupants is encouraged to contact Officer Chris Cabrera at 253-835-6700 or the Federal Way Police Department at 253-835-2121. The case number is #23-02626.

“We know that someone out there knows where this vehicle is and/or can identify the suspects in the bulletin picture,” Federal Way Police Cmdr. Kurt Schwan said in a statement. “We urge the community to contact the Federal Way Police Department so these suspects can be held accountable.”
