Pacific Highway construction

• A final pavement overlay on Pacific Highway South will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Aug. 18-22. Traffic on the highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction during this time.

• The west leg of South 288th Street will be closed from 8 p.m. to midnight during this time. South Dash Point Road will also be closed between 16th Avenue South at this time. Redondo Way South and Pacific Highway South will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. on the above dates. Detour routes will be provided.

• On Aug. 20 and 21, 18th Avenue South at Pacific Highway South will be closed from 8 p.m. to midnight. The east leg of South 288th Street will be closed between 18th Avenue South and Pacific Highway South from midnight to 4 a.m.

• Final overlay will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 22 at 18th Avenue South and Pacific Highway South, Dash Point Road between Redondo Way and Pacific Highway South and 16th Avenue South and Redondo Way South at South Dash Point Road. Traffic on these roads will be reduced to one lane in each direction during paving.

Chili cook-off on Sept. 27

The Federal Way Farmers Market will host a chili cook-off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at The Commons mall parking lot. Federal Way police and South King Fire and Rescue firefighters will face off in a battle to make the best chili. Tickets are $10 and include chili, corn bread, a drink and dessert.

All proceeds benefit South King Firefighters Foundation as well as the Special Olympics. The event will include live entertainment. For advance tickets, call Janice Siebenaler at (253) 529-7021 or Marty Markey at (253) 926-5925. Tickets will be available at the Federal Way Farmers Market.

Preschool open house

The Federal Way Co-op Preschool will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at Federal Way United Methodist Church, 29645 51st Ave. S. in Auburn. The school is now enrolling children ages 2 to 5. For more information, call (253) 486-7949.

Lakota news

Lakota Middle School will host three evenings for families to come and get ready for the next school year from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 26, 27 and 28. Sixth-graders are invited to come on Aug. 27. Seventh-graders are invited on Aug. 28 and eighth-graders are invited on Aug. 26.

Students and their parents are encouraged to come during those times to return forms, pick up student schedules, have pictures taken, purchase p.e. uniforms, purchase ASB cards, purchase yearbooks and pay fees.
