Gas leak near Federal Way High School leads to business evacuations

A gas leak has been reported at 308th/310th Street and Pacific Highway South in Federal Way.

A gas leak was reported at 308th/310th Street and Pacific Highway South in Federal Way. The leak was caused by a construction crew, according to a police spokesman. Police and fire crews evacuated nearby businesses.

Puget Sound Energy shut down the gas leak at 12:30 p.m., according to a PSE spokeswoman. PSE is investigating the incident and will notify affected businesses as to when it is safe to return. Pacific Highway South is experiencing heavy traffic in both directions between 304th Street and 312th Street. Use I-5 or Military Road as an alternate.

Federal Way High School will not be evacuated. According to an e-mail from school district spokeswoman Diane Turner, after-school activities and home athletic events at Federal Way High School scheduled for today (Sept. 7) will continue as planned.
