At 8 a.m. Dec. 21, a man was exercising in Town Square Park in Federal Way when he was attacked, according to the Federal Way Police Department.

After attacking the man with a hatchet and knocking him to the ground, the assailant fled. Despite a quick response and flooding the area with officers, police were unable to locate the suspect. They have yet to be able to identify him as of Friday afternoon (Dec. 22).

The victim is in his 70s and he is currently receiving treatment at Harborview Medical Center for serious injuries, according to police.

No information about witnesses to the crime or possible motivations of the assailant have been released yet.

Police are requesting help from the public to identify the suspect via a photograph obtained from CCTV on a bus before the attack. If anyone recognizes this person or has any information, call 253-835-2121. Police are instructing anyone who sees him to call 911 and refrain from approaching.
