A South King County Fire and Rescue station in Federal Way (31617 1st Ave. S.) is opening its doors to the community on May 12.

From 5 to 8 p.m., locals are invited to stop by to meet their firefighters and police officers. Attendees will also get to watch a rescue helicopter land and take off, see firefighters cut up cars with “the jaws of life,” stand back while the hazardous materials team performs science experiments, and much more.

Free hot dogs and raffles for swimming lessons or a new bike will be available. Sparky the fire dog mascot and Pluggie the fire hydrant robot will be on-hand for photos and entertainment.

Fire department officials said the open house has been held for nearly 20 years and is “always a big hit” for those who stop by.
