Federal Way women’s club donates $10k to day shelter efforts

The GFWC Sokico Woman’s Club met with the Federal Way Day Center Advisory Committee last week, presenting a $10,375 check during their visit to help defray costs.

The donated funds were raised at Sokico’s 16th annual dinner auction on Oct. 15, where guests raised their paddles to support the Federal Way Day Center. The center, which has been discussed for almost two years, will provide services to homeless and disadvantaged individuals in the Federal Way area.

Previous auctions have provided funds for GFWC Sokico to build and furnish a central kitchen for the residents of the Multi-Service Center’s Titusville transitional housing unit for women, purchase new mattresses and bedding for the DAWN safe house and the Multi-Service Center, provide $5,000 to support the expansion of the Federal Way Reach Out Shelter program, and donate $7,000 toward refurbishing the Auburn Youth Resources facility.

The local group also provides an annual $1,500 educational scholarship, donates dictionaries to third-grade elementary students in the Federal Way School District, and provides weekend meals to an area elementary school.

The Sokico Woman’s Club meets monthly. Women interested in the group can contact Linda Butcher at 253-927-6636 or ibslinda@comcast.net.
