Federal Way volunteers needed to give rides and change lives

Sound Generations, a comprehensive non-profit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington state, is seeking volunteer drivers to take seniors to appointments.

“Getting to the doctor’s office can seem daunting for many local seniors,” said Kailan Tyler-Babkirk, South King County Volunteer Transportation program coordinator for Sound Generations. “Poor vision or medical conditions prevent them from driving; limited mobility makes it impossible to take the bus; taxis come with prohibitive costs; and loved ones have full-time jobs that render them unavailable to help.”

More volunteer drivers are needed in Federal Way (and throughout King County). The volunteer transportation program is unable to keep up with the growing need for its services, Tyler-Babkirk said, because there are simply not enough volunteers.

The benefits, however, aren’t just one-way.

The value of Volunteer Transportation extends far beyond the rides themselves,” Tyler-Babkirk said. “A volunteer driver serves as a friendly escort — a companion — someone to talk to along the way. Volunteers turn previously stressful ordeals into pleasant, meaningful experiences.”

Volunteers should have a reliable vehicle, a clean driving record and some weekday availability. For information, call 206-748-7588, email Tyler-Babkirk at kailant@soundgenerations.org, or visit www.seniorservices.org/transportation.
