When adults hear a static-filled recording of improvisational jazz music, we have a sudden pang for something that isn’t around anymore. Well not anymore! The Federal Way Symphony Youth Summer Camp provides our kids improvisational skills and historical jazz licks that will assist our children in their passion of pursuing both individual and ensemble musical endeavors.

The instructors Todd Zimberg, Lonnie Mardis and Maestro A. Davenport are an impressive group of proactive, dynamic and compassionate professionals who are not only masters of their craft, but teachers who appreciate and get great satisfaction and joy in working with the camp enrollees.

The exploration of what happens is endlessly fascinating — whether the student plays the drums, piano, guitar, violin, etc. It is the communication, instruction and camaraderie that makes a compelling learning experience.

This year, the symphony is creating an additional opportunity devoted to vocal performance taught by Pamela Casella and Craig Nim. Think of school choir, church choir, etc. Also, think “Glee” — where kids and adults alike identify with the musical comedy-drama television series that features on-screen performances based on musical numbers that aim to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits.

Instructors soprano Pamela Casella and baritone Craig Nim have many students who are involved with Northwest production company performances as well as Broadway and opera productions. With more than 30 years of experience in the performing arts all over the world, the Symphony Youth Summer Camp’s vocal entre will include activities that are focused on young performers to discover themselves in areas such as song interpretation, vocal technique, scene and ensemble preparation, etc.

The Federal Way Symphony Youth Summer Camp makes sure the sharps and flats keep a roller-coaster rhythm that builds and winds together the aspirations of our young musicians and vocalists. The resulting end performance is a decidedly delicious finale where both the students and audience will be looking forward to next year’s summer camp.

Full and partial scholarships are available to make sure all interested students can afford to attend. For more information, contact the Federal Way Symphony at (253)-529-9857 or visit federalwaysymphony.org.
