Elizabeth Sandstedt, a student at Federal Way Public Academy, spent the last week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Sandstedt was one of 18 students who served as Senate pages for the opening week of the 2015 legislative session.

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“It sounded like a good experience to have,” Sandstedt said. “We’ve been learning about government in school this year so I thought it would be a good year to do it.” She added that it was fun to see the different places on the capitol campus.

Sandstedt was sponsored by 30th Legislative District Sen. Mark Miloscia, R-Federal Way.

“I enjoyed having Elizabeth in the program,” Miloscia said. “As a substitute teacher, I know how valuable hands-on experience is for students to learn and this is a great way for Elizabeth and students like her to understand how our government works.”

In addition to being in her school’s honor society and spirit committee, Sandstedt enjoys horseback riding and is on the yearbook staff.

Sandstedt is the daughter of Karen Kirkpatrick and Steve Sandstedt of Federal Way.
