Federal Way Public Schools seek public input regarding an additional $2 million in budget cuts that must be made.

The first round of open public conversation regarding this issue will be Tuesday at the board’s regular scheduled meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall. A second round of input is scheduled for the school board’s June 28 meeting. The additional cuts are a result of the operating budget that state lawmakers passed on May 25.

The additional cuts come on top of $8 million that the school district has already shaved from its 2011-12 budget. The initial round of budget cuts raised some ire within the community because of some jobs being lost and a significant reduction in hours for kindergarten paraeducators.

According to a June 10 press release from Federal Way schools, the district has been “credited…with getting greater results with less money than any other district in the state,” but cautions that “as funding continues to evaporate, the district’s ability to sustain a world-class education for all of our students will be severely tested.”
