Longtime Federal Way resident and state lawmaker Mark Miloscia appeared headed to a first-place finish Tuesday night in the Washington State Auditor primary election, setting up a November race against second-place finisher Pat McCarthy.

Preliminary returns as of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday showed Miloscia, the only Republican on the primary ballot, leading the pack of five Auditor’s Office aspirants with 37.4 percent of the vote (about 282,000 total votes). Democrat McCarthy followed with 30.8 percent (about 232,000 votes), beating out fellow Democrat Jeff Sprung and Independent candidate Mark Wilson. David Golden, who did not state a party preference, finished with the fewest votes.

In the federal races impacting Federal Way, U.S. Rep. Adam Smith (D-District 9) appears to be gearing up to face Republican Doug Basler in November. Smith won 56.8 percent of the vote to Basler’s 24.8 in the race that featured two additional Democrats on the ballot, one candidate with no stated party preference and no other Republicans.

Federal Way resident Mark Greene, running under the Citizens Party banner, drew the fewest votes in the 11-candidate race for Lieutenant Governor.

At the state legislative level, both of Federal Way’s seats in the Washington House of Representatives are up for election in November, and both of the races drew two candidates who will advance to the general election. For Pos. 1, Democrat Mike Pellicciotti drew 51.8 percent of the vote to incumbent Republican Rep. Linda Kochmar’s 48.2, or about 6,100 to about 5,700 votes. For Pos. 2, Democrat Kristine Reeves received 50.2 percent of the vote to incumbent Republican Rep. Teri Hickel’s 49.8 percent, a virtual tie of Reeves’ 5,977 to Hickel’s 5,922.

Federal Way resident Dave Larson and incumbent Charlie Wiggins, the only two candidates in their race, will advance to the general election for Position 6 on the Supreme Court of Washington.
