The Washington Association of Sewer and Water Districts recognized 30th District Rep. Linda Kochmar, R-Federal Way, for her outstanding support of special purpose sewer and water districts.

Kochmar was the co-sponsor of several bills over the past two years that the association supported.

These included Senate House Bill 1512, which was a comprehensive bill addressing payment for fire hydrants and other fire suppression equipment; House Bill 2142, which addressed the assumption of water/sewer districts by cities; and House Bill 2170, which would allow districts to issue their own warrants under certain conditions.

Kochmar was a valuable addition to the House Local Government Committee because of her extensive local government experience working for Lakehaven Utility District and serving on the Federal Way City Council, including as mayor.

A plaque recognizing Kochmar was presented on Aug. 25 at the Washington Association of Sewer and Water District’s office in Tukwila.

Founded in 1995, the Washington Association of Sewer & Water Districts represents the state’s special purpose sewer and water districts. These districts provide services to 30% of the population in Washington. There are 176 special purpose sewer and water districts in the state.

One of the Association’s roles is to provide education and training to elected district commissioners and continuing education classes for general managers and certified operators of water and wastewater treatment plants.

It also fosters increased communication between members and encourages standardization of water and sewer methods and services bringing benefits to ratepayers. Finally, the Association represents the interests of special purpose districts in the Washington legislature and with state and local regulatory agencies.
