A 20-year-old man is recovering from a gunshot wound at Harborview Medical Center after Federal Way police fired at the man during a domestic disturbance call at 9:21 p.m. Aug. 19 in the 27300 block of 24th Avenue South.

Kent Police Department is conducting an independent investigation of the incident, as is typical in officer-involved cases.

Federal Way police responded to the apartment and found three occupants: A male suspect, his brother and the brother’s girlfriend, according to Kent police chief Steve Strachan. The suspect was naked and belligerent upon police arrival, according to Strachan. Preliminary statements indicate alcohol and possibly drugs could have contributed to the incident, he said.

The suspect picked up a knife and held it above his head before charging at the two Federal Way officers responding to the call, reports said. The officers fired, injuring the man.

The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to Harborview. He underwent surgery and suffers from non life-threatening injuries, Strachan said.

The Federal Way officers are on paid administrative leave until Kent police are finished investigating, according to a Federal Way police statement.

“Domestic disturbances, alcohol and weapons in the home can create a volatile and deadly mix,” Strachan said in a press release. “Preliminary information shows that these officers acted appropriately when faced with a deadly threat, but we will continue our investigation to ensure all questions are answered.”
