A Federal Way man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder stemming from a 2020 incident at Safeway in Seattle.
On May 9, 2025, Tayjuan Trevion Fletcher, 23, was sentenced to 360 months in prison for two counts of second-degree murder after a jury determined Aug. 12, 2024, that Fletcher was guilty. According to charging documents, these charges stem from an incident at a Safeway, located at 9262 Rainier Ave. South in Seattle, on May 23, 2020, when Fletcher was trying to shoot a man, but instead fatally shot two other men.
According to court documents, the maximum sentence Fletcher could have received was about 55 years, and the lowest sentence he could have received was about 39 years. Despite the low-end sentence being about 39 years, the court granted Fletcher an exceptional downward sentence due to the mitigating factor of youthfulness. In requesting an exceptional sentence, Fletcher’s attorney also cited that Fletcher was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The prosecution recommended a sentence of 40 years, within the standard sentencing range. Following release, Fletcher will be on 36 months of community custody.
Details of the incident
According to court documents, a witness arrived at the parking lot and was chatting with a group of friends, including an older man in his 30s or 40s who was sitting in a Chevrolet Tahoe. The witness said that while chatting, Fletcher joined the group, and when he joined, she noticed he had a firearm with an extended magazine hanging out of his waistband.
The witness added that Fletcher had referred to his gun as having a “30 clip.” The witness said that Fletcher then began arguing with the man in the Tahoe, calling him names and asking him to fight.
The charging documents say that Fletcher was arguing with the man and telling him that he was born into the Down with the Crew gang, and that he was not sworn into the gang because he claimed that his father had initiated the Down with the Crew gang. The witness said the older man in the Tahoe laughed at Fletcher, which seemed to make Fletcher angrier.
Following the older man’s laughter, the witness said Fletcher pulled out his gun and began shooting at the man while walking backward. The witness said she witnessed her friend get shot and fall to the ground, and another man get shot and fall to the ground.
She said the older man in the Tahoe was uninjured and then drove away. The witness said after firing, Fletcher ran away toward the gas pumps.
Another witness who worked in the area and was leaving work said she heard two popping noises and saw Fletcher running backward. She said she heard around 10 popping noises in total.
Officers responding to the scene found one man, identified as Christopher D. Roberts, dead from gunshot wounds. A second victim, Christopher Wilson, was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Officers found twelve .45 caliber casings at the scene.
The witness later identified Fletcher from a photo montage and said she was sure he was the shooter. Other witnesses also named Fletcher as the shooter, and Fletcher had messaged one of Wilson’s friends — one of the victims — through his Facebook account, saying that when people heard the pops, it was not fireworks.
The friend also told Fletcher that he “killed the homies,” to which Fletcher responded, “ain’t no disrespecting my pops.” The friend responded, telling Fletcher that he had shot over 25 times, but did not hit the man with whom he had been arguing.
Fletcher was subsequently arrested on June 7, 2020, in SeaTac when he was in the backseat of a vehicle he was known to be associated with. In the backseat, in front of Fletcher, there was a .45 caliber firearm with an extended magazine. There was also a .45 caliber bullet found in Fletcher’s pocket.
