Christopher Kerns, a 41-year-old Federal Way man, was killed Thursday while in a crosswalk in Puyallup.

Kerns was crossing the busy intersection at River Road and North Meridian Street around 7 p.m. in front of the auto dealership he worked at.

Police arrested a 64-year-old Olympia man they believe was on drugs at the time of the accident. The driver was jailed on suspicion of vehicular homicide and is expected to be charged Monday, according to Puyallup police.

Capt. Scott Engle said it’s unknown what drugs the driver was allegedly on. Police are awaiting the results of a blood test taken after the crash, Engle told The News Tribune.

The driver was heading south on North Meridian Street in a 2002 Lexus when he allegedly ran a red light, hit a car in the intersection and then struck Kerns in the crosswalk.

The Lexus continued south on North Meridian with Kerns on the hood of the car, jumped up and over a curb and hit a sign and four vehicles, three of which were parked in the Korum Ford dealership’s lot, according to The News Tribune.

Kerns has worked at the Ford dealership in Puyallup for 14 months. He was also studying civil engineering at a local college, according to The News Tribune.
