Federal Way police arrested a 21-year-old man on Wednesday evening for his connection to the drive-by shooting that left one dead and two injured in Federal Way on July 30.

Federal Way police arrested a 21-year-old man on Wednesday evening for his connection to a drive-by shooting that left one dead and two injured in Federal Way on July 30.

Maurice L. Oatts of Tacoma is being held on a $350,000 bail for the murder of Muldhata U. Dawud, age 20. However, according to King County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Dan Donohoe, prosecutors have yet to make a decision on whether Oatts will be charged or not.

Detectives are currently conducting search warrants on Oatts’s vehicle and home.

“The investigation is ongoing to determine additional facts and circumstances surrounding the crime,” said Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock in a news release. “The suspect has been booked into King County Jail for investigation of murder in the first degree and assault in the first degree.”

Residents living near the 32500 block of First Ave. S. called police to report sounds of gunshots atapproximately 1:05 a.m. last Thursday.

Witnesses told police the shooting suspect drove up along-side the victims and opened fire, car-to-car, police said.

St. Francis Hospital staff called 911 within minutes to report gunshot victims arrived there by aprivate vehicle. Dawud and two other male victims ages 18 and 19 were struck by gunfire andwere being treated at the hospital. On July 31, the King County Medical Examiner’s Officeannounced that Dawud had died of a gunshot wound to his torso. The two other victims areexpected to survive.

All three men are from the Seattle area.

Witnesses said the suspect’s vehicle was described as a red Chevrolet Impala-style vehicle and thesuspect was described as a African-American man with a stocky build and dreadlocks.
