Federal Way Council approves contract with Centerstage Theatre

The Federal Way City Council voted during their meeting on Tuesday to approve the new contract agreement with Centerstage Theatre.

The Federal Way City Council voted during their meeting on Tuesday to approve the new contract agreement with Centerstage Theatre.

“This has been the product of a lot of hard work and a lot of patience and goodwill,” Mayor Jim Ferrell said. “I think it’s a win-win-win. A win for Centerstage, for the city and also for the public. I think we’re going to have a much better run facility and be able to use this public facility to its fullest and best use.”

The agreement will run from October 2015 through June 2018. The city will pay a management fee of $82,000 a year from October 2015 through April 2016.

The fee will increase to $100,000 from May 2016 through June 2018.

Upkeep of the Knutzen Family Theatre at Dumas Bay Centre, which Centerstage has operated since 2009, will be covered by the management fee.

The city will acquire the ability to rent out the space in front of the theatre area, the rehearsal hall and lobby area of Dumas Bay Centre.

This will generate revenue and save money for future capital expenses.

Centerstage will keep the rental income from current tenants until April 2016.

The city will begin managing and retaining rental income from non-performance based renters in May 2016.

Public support for Centerstage came immediately after city officials announced they would let their contract with the group expire on June 30.

The city received over 800 emails in support of Centerstage from Federal Way residents and non-residents.

“What we saw in the last several months is definitely unique,” Councilman Martin Moore said. “You got people actively involved through grassroots and making sure your voices are being heard. I think it’s safe to say that City Hall heard you guys loud and clear.”
