A structural fire at a Century Square Self Storage unit spread to other nearby units, prompting a multi-department response.
At 3:46 p.m. June 29, South King Fire was dispatched to the 1100 block of S. 324th St. in Federal Way. According to spokesperson Capt. Brad Chaney, there were reports of smoke and flames from a commercial self-storage facility at Century Square Self Storage.
According to Chaney, the first responding units found that the flames at the storage unit were spreading to others. He said within minutes of the initial dispatch, the fire had spread to five units as crews worked to gain access, establish water supplies and attack the fire.
Chaney said that due to the structure’s layout, the fire continued spreading, and the contents of each unit generated excessive amounts of heat, making it challenging to contain the fire quickly. He said a second alarm was dispatched to bring in more resources.
“Puget Sound Fire, Valley Regional Fire, and Tacoma Fire all contributed to the efforts of extinguishing the fire. Using multiple handlines and aerial ladders, crews were able to extinguish the fire,” Chaney said. “Other crews worked to force entry to multiple units to assist with gaining access to hidden spot fires. After almost an hour and a half of extensive coordinated efforts, the fire was finally under control.”
Chaney said that no one was injured.
