“Lord, send guardian angels around them, and place a hedge of protection over them today.”

Fifteen simple words — but fifteen words that a local couple, Mike and Carol Garcia, hope will be used to protect law enforcement officers, firefighters and members of the military.

The duo hopes to distribute small cards with the above prayer (or a positive affirmation for people who don’t pray) to local churches and groups. It’s an attempt to help create positive energy for those who put their lives on the line every day. Called “Voice of the City: Enough is Enough,” both Garcias hope to see their idea become something positive in the world, especially when it seems like there’s so much negativity.

Mike Garcia said the idea came to him after a number of police officer deaths in the Puget Sound area, most notably the four Lakewood officers who were killed in 2009, and other officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

“I was watching TV when the news came on and they announced another police officer had died,” Garcia said. “I said, ‘Wow, that’s sad,’ and then my spirit jumped inside of me, and I was surprised, and it said, ‘Enough is enough.’ I was surprised, I said, ‘I agree with that, but what can I do, I work at Boeing.’”

Garcia said he really took that moment of self-reflection to heart, and decided that his prayer/affirmation cards were the solution. He explained his reasoning behind the cards and wanting to give people an avenue for saying a prayer or a message of support.

“When you and I drive down the street, and we see a police officer pass us, we say, ‘OK, speed is good, seatbelt is on, phone is down.’ We’re good. They pass us, we don’t say anything negative, but we don’t say anything positive either,” he said. “All of us citizens, we do what we do, we pay our taxes and think that’s enough. I want to go one step further, and that is, when we see that police officer…I want to do step four, which is to say, ‘Lord, just put a hedge of protection on him, protect him for this day.’”

Garcia says he believes the police, firefighters and military all could use more positive energy directed their way in today’s world — especially the police.

“We know, if they drive in different directions in town, people want to harm them (the police), they want to kill them, throw rocks at them, they want to shoot them,” Garcia said. “They even have music to back up their belief system…Everyone always says positive words are good, so if positive words are good, then negative words are working as well, so we have to overcome the negative words.”

The hope is for this idea to become viral, with it spreading from here in Washington across the country to Washington, D.C., Garcia said.

“The governor can’t do anymore, the Legislature can’t do anymore, the police officers can’t really do anymore, so I decided, enough is enough,” he added.

Locally, Garcia said he’s open to speak to churches, community groups and anyone else who would like to hear more. He also hopes to gain more exposure by challenging KIRO’s “Ron and Don Show” and “The Dori Monson Show” to have him on as a guest to talk about his idea. He would like to see local leaders, such as Congressman Dave Reichert (R-District 8), also take up the cause.

Garcia plans to attend the Dec. 2 meeting of the Federal Way City Council to share his idea there.

“If we’re doing something positive, we’re going some place positive, and counteracting the negative,” Mike Garcia shared.
