Starting July 13, the cost of a passport will increase for adults and minors. The higher fee applies to first-time passport books, cards, additional visa pages and file searches. It also applies to passport renewals. The federal government is responsible for the increased costs.

Passport books will jump in price $35, for a total cost of $135 for adults, individuals age 16 and over. Passport books for minors will now cost $105, which is a $20 increase. Books are required for all air travel outside the United States.

The price for a passport card will jump up $10 for adults and $5 for minors. The total prices will come to $55 and $40, respectively. Cards are good for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

In Federal Way, where passports can be obtained at City Hall, the city’s $25 execution fee and $60 fee for expedited passports will remain the same and be added onto the price of a passport book or card. The overnight mailing fee has jumped 11 cents, to $14.96.

Renewals are handled by mail through the federal government. Applications for renewals may be obtained at www.travel.state.gov/passport or at Federal Way City Hall.

Passports are not necessary for direct travel between the United States and its territories, including Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and the Marianas.
