Following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:

• Bloody hotel wastebasket: At 7:20 a.m. April 13 in the 1400 block of South 320th Street, officers were called to the Extended Stay hotel when an employee located a wastebasket containing a substantial amount of blood and left inside the third-floor common trash room. A presumptive test was conducted and the blood was determined to be human. A guest list was obtained, and officers went door to door conducting welfare checks due to the amount of blood and the apparent fresh nature. The investigation revealed the only room to have a trash can missing was room 306. Two males inside were contacted. Neither male could/would provide an explanation for the blood. Neither male appeared injured. A voluntary consent to search the room (and the subject’s car) was obtained. Blood was located on the bathroom floor and on towels, and had been cleaned up. A welfare check was also conducted at the subject’s Federal Way address with negative results. A family member advised officers that one of the two subjects has medical/mental issues. Local hospitals were checked for victims with negative results. Swabs were obtained from the scene and comparison swabs were obtained from the two males. The investigation did not establish that a crime had been committed. The males were released on scene. Lab testing is pending.

• Falling asleep in the drive-thru: At 2:19 a.m. April 14 in the 2000 block of SW Campus Drive, it was reported a man had passed out in his vehicle while waiting in the drive-thru line at Taco Bell. The report notes the man was eventually arrested for DUI.

• Passed out driver, part deux: At 3:40 a.m. April 14 in the 30000 block of 2nd Avenue SW, another person was found passed out in their vehicle. According to the report, the man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and for driving with a suspended license.

• Mail theft: At 9 a.m. April 14 in the 2500 block of South 316th Lane, unknown suspects broke into a mailbox cluster at an apartment complex and stole an unknown amount of mail.

• Not what Macklemore had in mind: At 11:29 a.m. April 14 in the 32000 block of Pacific Highway South, the suspect was arrested for attempting to steal $17 worth of items from Goodwill.

• Vehicle prowl: At 11:58 a.m. April 13 in the 1900 block of South 331st Street, the victim’s vehicle was broken into and a number of tools, along with a bottle of prescription medication, were stolen. The report notes surveillance of the break-in was available and was being reviewed.

• Bag of mail found on roadside: At 11:48 a.m. April 13 in the 600 block of SW 323rd Street, the reporting party said they had noticed an odd bag alongside a road for a number of days. When they finally investigated the bag, they discovered it was full of stolen mail. Police took the bag from the reporting party and booked it into evidence for safekeeping.

• Woman avoids arrest because of how drunk she is: At 1:01 p.m. April 13 in the 28000 block of 25th Place South, a woman’s aunt contacted police because the woman had shown up unwanted at the aunt’s house. According to the report, the woman was incredibly intoxicated. The report notes the woman had several active warrants, but was not arrested. Instead, she was transported to the hospital for treatment because her blood-alcohol level was .411.

• Surveillance camera inception moment: At 4:45 p.m. April 13 in the 35000 block of Pacific Highway South, two suspects were recorded by a surveillance camera as they cut the lines to a number of other surveillance cameras and stole those cameras.

• Wire theft: At 3:34 a.m. April 12 in the 800 block of South 318th Street, a man reported witnessing unknown individuals stealing wire-like materials from a nearby construction site.

• HVAC units targeted again: At 3:57 p.m. April 12 in the 1000 block of South 320th Street, a building manager reported that the two HVAC units attached to his building had been gutted by unknown suspects. According to the report, the materials taken from the innards of the HVAC units had an estimated value of $9,000.
