Construction update for 21st Ave. SW and SW 336th St.

Work continues on the construction project at 21st Avenue SW and SW 336th Street, with a number of lanes and pedestrian access affected for the next couple of weeks.

From staff reports:

Work continues on the construction project at 21st Avenue SW and SW 336th Street, with a number of lanes and pedestrian access affected for the next couple of weeks.

According to the city:

• Lanes have been shifted along SW 336th Street and 21st Avenue SW to allow for construction work along the north side of SW 336th St. and also on 21st Ave. SW, north of SW 336th St. The city indicates this “configuration is expected to last through the summer months.”

• Removal of sidewalks on the north side of SW 336th St. has required a change in pedestrian access. According to the city, during “the daytime hours sidewalk closures will occur which may shift pedestrian traffic to the other side of the roadway.” Conversely, “during non-work hours pedestrian and wheelchair access will be provided in the closed lane between the traffic garrets and the curb west of 19th Avenue SW.”

• Residents should expect “intermittent daytime lane closures along SW 336th St. westbound and 21st Ave. SW northbound for the next few months to allow for access to the construction zone.” Lane closure hours are between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. westbound on SW 336th St. and on 21st Ave. SW. Lane closure hours on SW 336th St. eastbound are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Residents should also expect night work during the week of Aug. 19-23 so the city can “install a storm drainage crossing” in the area. According to the city, this work will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and drivers should expect “multiple lane closures and lane shifts during this time.” Federal Way police officers will be on hand to direct traffic at the intersection of 21st Ave. SW and SW 336th St., and at the intersection of 19th Ave. SW and SW 336th St. during different nights Aug. 19-23.

Upcoming work, Aug. 19-23

According to the city, day and night work will continue to take place during this week. For daytime operations, crews are anticipated to “install gravel base for the widened roadway along the north side of SW 336th St. from the east end of the project to 21st Ave. SW along the north side of SW 336th St. and along the east side of 21st Ave. SW, north of SW 336th St.”

Crews are also expected to “install porous grid pavement within the pond near the Dairy Queen, install block walls by Bank of America and install forms for walls along the north side of SW 336th St. from 21st Ave. SW to SW 334th Place.”

Additionally, “crews will continue to install illumination and signal conduits at the intersection of 21st Ave. SW and SW 336th St. as well as at the new signal location at Dairy Queen.”

For evening work, crews are expected to “install storm drainage crossings at 21st Ave. SW, remove storm water facilities on the south side of SW 336th St. in the vicinity of 19th Ave. SW and install new facilities on the southwest corner of the intersection of SW 336th St. and 21st Avenue SW in front of Dairy Queen.”

Upcoming work, Aug. 26-30

The city anticipates that “crews…will continue with roadway excavation and base gravel installation for U-turn pockets on the south side of SW 336th St. at the Dairy Queen and the southwest side corner of the intersection of 21st Ave. SW and SW 334th St.”

Crews are also expected to “continue with the walls along the north side of SW 336th St., east of 21st Ave. SW, as well as continuing work on installation of illumination and signal conduit at the intersection of 21st Ave. SW and SW 336th St.” That illumination and signal conduit work will also continue at “the new signal location by the Dairy Queen” and it’s anticipated that installation of an interconnect along the west side of 21st Ave. SW between SW 336th St. and SW 344th St. will begin.
