Bonsai auction features more than 80 finished trees

The Puget Sound Bonsai Association will hold its 6th annual auction from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 4 in the courtyard of Weyerhaeuser’s Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection, 33663 Weyerhaeuser Way in Federal Way.

The free event will feature a live auction, a silent auction, professional critique of trees to be auctioned, a bonsai styling demonstration and a free buffet. A professional auctioneer will auction 80 finished bonsai trees, many of which have been professionally styled.

Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art involving miniature trees that are grown in containers and “trained” to take on a certain shape. Located next to the Rhododendron Botanical Species Garden, the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection is now open permanently after closing for a year, due to budget cuts at Weyerhaeuser, starting in 2009. Two staff members had been retained to maintain the tree collection.

“We are trying to find a new owner for the bonsai collection,” said Scarlet Gore, a gardener for the collection, in a May report in The Mirror.
