Federal Way retirement campus is the ‘natural choice’ for active, independent living

Family-owned business enriches lives and builds community in a breathtaking natural setting

For seniors looking for a retirement community where they can enjoy a variety of activities and events, Village Green Retirement Campus in Federal Way offers services and surroundings like no other in the area.

Village Green was founded under the inspiration and guidance of Master Gardener Monte Powell of Powellswood Gardens, and is still owned by Monte, Diane, and the Powell family. Monte is still actively involved in grounds maintenance as well as day-to-day campus operations.

From the beginning, they’ve focused on creating a breathtaking natural setting, and ensuring that their practices are as eco-friendly as possible – offering sustainability, and promoting a healthy, green lifestyle. They believe in the healing powers of nature and the peacefulness and tranquility that can only be found by embracing the beauty of the outdoors.

Complementing the great staff, beautiful homes and gorgeous surroundings, Village Green also offers weekly events and activities that include art classes, book club, card and casino games, puzzle-making and ping pong.

“Many of our residents really enjoy the opportunity to participate in our fitness programs, especially the dance class – it gives them a chance to reminisce about the good old days!” says Executive Director Kim Salas.

The large campus also features walking paths to help keep residents physically active in a safe, calming environment, where neighbors enjoy gathering in any of the three gazebos or strolling the perennial gardens.

Residents also stay busy with many social and recreational programs, both on campus – like barbecues, picnics and wine-and-cheese socials – and off campus, attending performances by the Federal Way Symphony, for example, or plays at the Federal Way Performing Arts Center.

Among the great amenities enjoyed by the residents is the dining, prepared by highly trained staff under the guidance of their own Chef Michael, who’s been preparing a wide variety of menu choices for the last 15 years. “Some of the items our residents really like include Halibut San Juan, baked salmon, and ribs,” Salas says. “Beyond the great food, the dining room provides the opportunity for residents throughout the campus to come together.

“We also have our 24-hour juice bar which offers beverages, cookies and other snacks and serves as another great social location.”

Coming in August 2022 is an open-to-the-public campus-wide event, Evening on the Green, an opportunity to showcase the campus, the amenities and the talents of the chef. Guests can explore three themed destinations, each with music and food paired with Washington wines, a raffle, and a chance for residents and guests to hop on a golf cart to tour the model apartments and cottages.

All of this comes together to create a retirement community whose residents are fully physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually engaged.
