Building relationships, one home care visit at a time

Personalized Federal Way senior services showcase the many benefits of interactive caregiving

Dru Reith first connected with Comfort Keepers when her father needed help at home. While he was unhappy about the change at first, as he connected with his caregiver and enjoyed the benefits of her visits, they soon became a highlight of his week.

“Dad was growing older and needed some help, but it can be hard for a stranger to come into your house. It’s an acknowledgement that you’re unable to look after everything like you used to,” says Reith, Comfort Keepers’ Client Care Coordinator here in Federal Way.

Reith often shares her story with families new to Comfort Keepers – having been there herself, she understands their concerns. Her hands-on approach helps.

“We spend a lot of time with our clients, ensuring we find the right caregiver fit for their personality, interests and needs, and I check in with them regularly to see how they’re doing.”

From companionship to more specialized care, the Comfort Keepers team provides personalized support to help seniors live independently while maintaining their quality of life. For some, it’s a regular visit to prepare nourishing meals, take a walk or help with daily tasks, while others need additional support, including respite or live-in care.

What makes Comfort Keepers unique is the time and thought that goes into matching the right caregiver for each client and their needs, ensuring they feel heard in the process. They also prioritize interactive caregiving.

If someone loves to cook, for example, they’ll be matched with a caregiver who’ll enjoy creating favorite recipes together. If they love walking, exploring new parks can become a regular activity.

Reith recalls one client who was concerned how her caregiver would react to her dog. Matching her with an animal lover, the two frequently share walks with the furry companion.

“I think that what makes us different is that we focus on building relationships,” Reith reflects.

Recognizing the apprehension that can accompany change, Reith often accompanies her caregivers on the introductory visit so she can ensure everyone feels comfortable. She also encourages new clients to write a list of their questions, which they review together.

Often they’re curious about how the caregivers are hired, for example. “We do amazingly thorough background checks, and hire compassionate professionals who really enjoy connecting with people on a meaningful level.”

The impact of both the physical and emotional benefits can be profound.

“Just yesterday I was visiting with a man who had suffered severe depression after his wife died. ‘If it wasn’t for your caregiver’s cooking and care,’ he told me, ‘I wouldn’t be here.’”
