Newspapers can be recycled just about anywhere, but some people may wonder about other types of paper, like “glossy” paper.

How about mail with clear plastic address windows? What about paper with staples, cereal boxes, or plastic-lined milk cartons? Yes, yes, and yes — they are all recyclable in your curbside recycling cart.

In Federal Way, just about any type of paper — office paper, paper board and cardboard — can be recycled at the curb. We draw the line at oil and dirt. Keep greasy or soiled items out of your curbside recycling cart.

Shredded paper also poses issues. The tiny pieces can’t be sorted with the rest of the paper and end up as a residue that has to be landfilled. Plus, shredded paper can turn into confetti, becoming litter during collection. Instead, layer shredded paper into yard waste carts or compost piles. Remember, no plastics such as credit cards. Then it can become a useful soil amendment.
