National Reading Month is coming up next week!

March 1 kicks off National Reading Month, a nationwide celebration of literacy encouraging readers, young and old, to spend more time reading. Reading serves as a healthy exercise for our minds by improving creativity, critical thinking skills, and concentration. It also helps expand our perspective on others and the world around us and so much more!

Federal Way Public Schools is committed to helping scholars develop strong reading habits, starting in elementary through high school graduation.

We’re excited to celebrate National Reading Month to promote reading through a variety of activities and highlights. FWPS scholars and families are invited to join in the following activities throughout the month, designed to promote a culture of reading:

Check out the Scholar Recommended Booklist We’re excited to bring back the Scholar Recommended Booklist for the 3rd year in a row! During the month of February, we collected book nominations from PreK-12th grade scholars across the district who shared their favorite reads of the year with us. Check out a list of books that are capturing the attention of scholars, along with why they love them! View this year’s booklist on our website beginning on March 1, 2024, at www.fwps.org/ScholarBooklist.

Participate in the Reading Marathon Challenge Students are challenged to read for 7 days in a row during the month of March for a set length of time appropriate for their grade level and track their progress in a reading log which can be entered into a drawing for a prize!

Explore the Library Encourage your child to uncover their next favorite story by browsing the array of books at their school’s physical or online library or by visiting a local branch of the King County Library System. All FWPS students have access to the King County Library System’s online resources and eBooks and the opportunities are endless!

Submit a Reading Photo We want to see our scholars reading! Post or send us photos of your child reading or participating in any of these activities at socialmedia@fwps.org, so we can celebrate our scholars in action on our social media channels.

We also invite the broader Federal Way community to join us in celebrating National Reading Month by setting your own personal reading goal and sharing your photos and progress on social media using #NationalReadingMonth.

We look forward to celebrating National Reading Month with each of you as we highlight all the reading activities and events happening across Federal Way! For more information, follow us on social media @FWPS210 or visit www.fwps.org/NationalReadingMonth.
