Federal Way’s Biggest Loser: We have a winner

They lost — and no one could be happier about it.

The Federal Way Community Center’s Biggest Loser competition came to a close on Saturday. April Ellington walked away as the Biggest Loser, losing 35.25 pounds and 19 percent body fat.

As a group, the competitors lost 1,082 pounds — an average of more than 15 pounds per person.

Ellington was previously featured on a Jenny Craig national weight loss commercial with Kirsti Alley for losing 75 pounds three years ago. She was flown to New York to film the ad; both Alley and Ellington lost the weight in the same amount of time.

However, some of the weight crept back up, and Ellington joined the Biggest Loser competition to lose it again.

Ellington jumped from second to first place in the week leading up to the finale.

“I was really surprised,” Ellington said. “I ended up just basically cranking it up. I really wanted to hit my goal weight.”

A’ndria Salcedo, whose progress was followed in The Mirror, was in first place throughout the competition and finished in second place, losing 36.5 pounds and 18.07 percent body fat.

“I loved it,” Salcedo said. “I love my trainer. Nothing in my closet fits. I love that!”

Salcedo said she plans on losing a few more pounds, then keeping it all off.

Mother-son team Kari and Scott Beuthien also let The Mirror track their progress in the competition.

Scott lost 9.5 pounds as well as three inches from his waist.

Kari lost 19 pounds and 16 inches overall.

She had to use her son’s belt the other day, since boys’ belts have more holes.

Kari credits their trainer for keeping them motivated.

“She just makes you feel like you’ve gotta go faster,” Kari said of running the track with her trainer. “She doesn’t understand that she’s changed 10 lives forever.”

Both Kari and Scott have already signed up for the next round of Biggest Loser, which starts April 6.

Couples competition

There are still spots available for the Biggest Loser Couples competition, which runs from April 6 to June 13. Cost for the program is $375 per person. Those who don’t sign up with a partner will be given one at the start.

The program will be run similar to the last one, in that there are two training sessions each week with a personal trainer in the groups.

The winning team receives six-month passes for the Community Center, and the runners-up receive three-month passes.
