RAINfest: A family-friendly community event will bring fun and learning together in support of a healthy environment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Steel Lake Park, located at 2410 S. 312th St. in Federal Way. The interactive event will feature local environmental organizations, expert workshops on sustainability and water pollution prevention and a concessions voucher upon completion of educational activities. This event is geared toward adults and kids alike who want to learn more about how to make their community more sustainable.

Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro: Join the Performing Arts and Event Center for Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro at 7 p.m. Sept. 16. Since first capturing global attention with his viral rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Shimabukuro has continually redefined what the ukulele can do, effortlessly traversing genres from classical to rock, jazz to folk, and everything in between. Valley Cities Coffee Chat: Valley Cities Behavioral Health is hosting a community coffee chat about suicide awareness from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at 33405 8th Ave. S. in Federal Way. The gathering will focus on education, understanding and prevention, bringing together local voices dedicated to saving lives and building a stronger, more connected community and feature a panel of experts.
Senior Commission Connection Luncheon: Join the Federal Way Senior Commission from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Federal Way Community Center for the quarterly Senior Commission Connection Luncheon. This month will feature special guest Ashlyn Sidhu of Your Senior Tech talking with the community about seniors and computers. The community center is located at 876 S. 333rd St. in Federal Way.
Free CERT Basic Course: The Greater Federal Way Community Emergency Response Team will host its Spring CERT Basic Course Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. from Sept. 17 through Nov. 12. CERT teaches residents disaster preparedness and planning, first aid, use of fire extinguishers, and search and rescue. Training is free. Mending Fair: Bring your items in need of mending from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 to the Federal Way Library on 34200 1st Way S. to get them fixed for free. At the heart of the Mending Fair is the Refugee Artisan Initiative, a local nonprofit empowering refugee and immigrant women through skilled, income-generating work. The event is put on in partnership between that organization, the library system and the City of Federal Way. Registration is recommended. Confidence in the Community – free haircuts: Building Beyond Communities is partnering with Paul Mitchell the School in Federal Way to offer 20 free haircuts to community members starting at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 22. Financial Literacy Classes: The City of Federal Way is partnering with community volunteers and the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University to offer the Bob Towne Financial Literacy Program, a free nine-week course teaching financial skills for Federal Way residents. The classes will be held every Thursday from Sept. 25 through Nov. 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Federal Way Community Center. The class is limited to 40 participants. Free child care is available for class participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Taste of Federal Way: Try tasty bites from local favorites and support a local nonprofit at the annual event from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Commons Mall.
