South King Fire & Rescue is hosting its 21st annual open house, in which the community is invited to attend the family oriented block party, which will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 25 at fire station 62, 31617 First Ave. S.

Each year SKFR brings together firefighters and special teams for demonstrations, as well as community partners in safety: the Federal Way Police, Lakehaven utility and an Airlift Northwest rescue helicopter.

Last year, nearly 1000 people enjoyed free hot dogs and some demonstrations of fire department capabilities. There are demonstrations of vehicle extrications with the “jaws of life,” and the Hazardous Materials team will showing off some of the wonders of chemical reactions and how they are ready to respond to these dangers. Federal Way is home to 13 fresh water lakes and protects 11 miles of Puget Sound coastline and SKFR surface waters rescue swimmers will demonstrate some of their specialized equipment and techniques.

Other presentations will be put on by the partner organizations. Federal Way Police SWAT and bomb squads will be on hand, too.
