Beamer senior gets her fixes from Special Olympics and coffee

Today, Caitlin Moore will participate in one of her favorite events, the Special Olympics.

Moore has been volunteering for the event three years now, helping through her church.

For Moore, seeing the athletes get so excited at their accomplishments is what makes it worthwhile.

“They will throw it two feet and they are so excited,” Moore said. “I love that feeling.”

The Special Olympics is just one of the soon-to-be Todd Beamer High School graduate’s activities.

She’s also president of her academy, Business and Industry, as well as vice president of the school, a varsity cross country runner, a manager for wrestling and a participant in many clubs. She also takes numerous Advanced Placement classes – she’s in her third semester of AP Literature now.

She is also active in her church and, until just recently, worked at Safeway for two and half years.

She’s been a leader at campus to help others, including the coordination of the Haiti relief fund at Beamer. Their goal was $1,000, which they raised the first day. They ended up giving Federal Way-based World Vision a check for $3,500. She helped on the Darfur Coalition, working to purchased bedding nets for the region that was torn apart by genocide.

It’s a schedule that just screams for coffee, which works well because Moore loves it.

“I am so excited to have my own coffee pot in my room,” Moore said of her post high school plans.

Moore is currently in the waiting list for Chapman University in California. In the meantime, her plan is to attend University of Washington-Tacoma in the fall and “get a general education for a good price,” she said.

Then it will be on to Chapman, which she chose after falling in love after her visit in November.

“It’s a very small school with a big school feel,” she said.

She plans to major in film production. She loves films and the emotions in them, but it’s more than just what’s on the screen that intrigues her.

“I find planning a film fascinating,” she said.

She also wants to minor in hospitality and management.

There are things she won’t miss about high school, such as the weekly essays and waking at 6 a.m. But Moore finds more things that she will miss, such as being part of Beamer, the traditional high school experience and borrowing coffee from teachers.

Class of 2010: A closer look

It’s time for high school graduations. The Mirror will take a closer look at high school seniors from each of the Federal Way high schools. These students have made their presence known already, doing multiple community service projects, challenging themselves in school and setting big goals for the future. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors.
