What is Federal Way country club doing to address algae? | Letter

In reading the recent front page story in the Mirror’s July 24 issue, interviews included comments from several individuals, among which were those from the president of the Twin Lakes Homeowners Association. The story also made references to Lake Lorene, one of the Twin Lakes.

The coverage accurately presented the Homeowners Association’s proactive efforts they have taken over the past few years, especially by current president Gary Darcey.

What was not addressed in the article is that only Lake Lorene has received such attention because it is owned by the Homeowners Association. Lake Jeanne, the other Twin Lake, is owned by the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club, a separate entity. As the responsible owner, the country club has taken little actions concerning the presence of algae growth on Lake Jeanne or their fairway pond.

For the past two years, Lake Jeanne has tested positive for toxic blue-green algae and the club’s actions have been limited to water sampling with no action taken to curtail algae growth on this lake.

Because of the level of toxins this year, the club is testing lake water on a weekly basis and has posted caution signage. However, the city of Federal Way recently put out warnings that Lake Jeanne has toxic algae present and that the lake is unsafe for people and pets.

Of significance, the club is using this toxic water from Lake Jeanne to spray irrigation water onto the golf courses’s fairways and greens. This could be a health hazard to golfers, fairway residents and perhaps even to the public. This is in addition to the lakeside residents who have had constant exposure to the toxic conditions for the last two summer seasons.

Perhaps the Mirror reporting staff could contact the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club and King County Health officials for additional comments and information that could be included in a follow-up reporting story? Thank you.
