Re: Walter Backstrom’s column “The new Republican Party” (July 25):

I am so tired of Republicans and their moral high ground, I don’t know where to start. Well, let’s start at the beginning. Mr. Backstrom admits to being ignored in his request for an interview (with Republican chairman Michael Steele) and only gets one due to his connections with Attorney General Rob McKenna. A small, but important, detail. As for diversity in the party, Mr Backstrom writes he “thought he saw some bilingual ballots.” This, he says, “clearly shows signs of progress.”

Funny in itself, but does the Republican Party really care about minorities or just want their votes? Most conservatives I know want to ship all “illegals” home, even if it means tearing their families apart. Moral high ground?

Near the end he says, “We will be proven right because we are right. We will win because we are truly on the side of the angels.” I assume “we” means Republicans. Has it really come to that? One party and all their beliefs are “right” and the rest of us are just ignorant heathens? And “on the side of angels?” If there are angels, I am certain they are not on the side of a party whose most consistent message is: “I want to keep all that I earn in my pocket.” Ultimately we need to listen to all groups and find a middle ground. It’s hard, isn’t it?
