Strong mayor: Eliminate the job | Federal Way letters

Did you happen to read the letters to the editor in the May 19 issue of The Mirror? If not, I suggest you read the one by Sheryl Nevers and the one by Bill Linehan.

I would like to comment on the one by Nevers. This is a “rah rah” piece praising the candidacy of Jim Ferrell for mayor. Supposedly, he is a wonderful man who really listens to the people.

Let me make a suggestion to the people who are running the campaign for Ferrell. Don’t ever use the term “he listens to the people.” You can fool the voters only so many times. Lately, have you noticed how politicians listen to the people? On the national level, the people definitely did not want the health care bill. Did the politicians listen? On the state level, the voters passed I-960, which said taxes could be increased only with a 60 percent majority vote. Did the politicians listen?

Now are we to believe Jim Ferrell when he says he listens? Not me.

Jim Ferrell is the architect of the idea of having a strong mayor form of government for Federal Way. He wants a nice, cushy, well-paying job as mayor. In the process, he has saddled the city with another level of government at a cost of $250,000 per year. He has won the first step in his plan. Now all he needs is your vote at the next election.

Frankly, I am opposed to the idea of a strong mayor. I will vote for any candidate who says he/she will work to eliminate the job.
