Please read report on airport traffic in Federal Way

We live in West Campus and noticed the substantial increase in airplane volume and number of flights over our house since Sea-Tac Airport put in the third runway.

I especially dislike the loud, middle of the night cargo planes, which disturb my sleep. Sea-Tac is soon going to expand greatly. This will make airplane noise louder and more frequent in Federal Way.

Please download the “Quiet and Healthy Skies Task Force Report” just released on the city of Federal Way website. You can just read the executive summary, or if you want to read the entire paper like I did, you can even run it off for free at a King County Library System branch as part of the 75 weekly internet pages library card holders are allowed.

This report is important as it presents facts and suggests strategies that the city could use to try to change and control some of the current and future air traffic noise.

According to the Sea-Tac Airport website, the Port of Seattle began the environmental review process of the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP), related to the upcoming expansion of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. They are asking the public to comment on environmental “scoping.” This is your opportunity to provide input about those hazardous and annoying environmental issues they should be studying, like increased noise, light, particulate and other pollutants, the low altitude of planes flying overhead and Sea-Tac Airport flight controllers’ directing flights straight over Federal Way rather than on differing trajectories as is done on the north side of the airport.

You can add comments and ideas to the scoping categories through Sept. 28. Go to sampenvironmentalreview.org, scroll down to “What should be studied” and fill in the form online.

You can send a letter by regular mail to: Steve Rybolt, Port of Seattle Aviation, Environment and Sustainability, PO Box 68727, Seattle, WA 98168 listing your concerns.

You can go to any of the four public meetings scheduled during the month of September. The Federal Way meeting from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 17 will be held at the Federal Way Community Center, 876 S 333rd St., one block from Federal Way City Hall.

Please participate and point out your concerns resulting from airport expansion. It will help us all!
