Mayoral race and the word ‘retain’ | Federal Way letters

Array

I just noticed the Linda Kochmar signs, now being planted around town. And all I can say is, “What?” Councilmember/ceremonial Mayor Kochmar wants to be “retained?” I suppose that it’s somehow legal to say that. Some might even call it clever advertising. But though I have always found Ms. Kochmar to be one of the more caring and engaging Federal Way City Council members, she has gone over the line.

To “retain” something means to keep it the way it is. What is it that she wants the voters to retain — other than the status quo? We just voted for change so that we’d finally get a real mayor at the helm. Kochmar, and all but one of her colleagues, told the people of Federal Way to vote against having an elected mayor. That attempt failed. And now she expects the voters to see her as the right person for the job? Voters, remember this when you see those signs — and the deceptive use of the word “retain.”

My vote will be for the one person who has been for the people first, from day one. Jim Ferrell.
