Your recent story on the Celebration Park bonds (Dec. 1) was of great interest. The saga of that original land purchase is quite a story unto itself. It was a uniquely bold move for a brand new city, first discussed over a table at Denny’s late one evening. Today, it remains the most controversial land purchase made by the city, and history shows just how wise that action was.

Media has gone too far

When has free speech and freedom of press gone too far? How many more mall, school, or other public shootings will it take before the media realizes they continue to play a pivotal role in the ongoing violence?

All too often, we hear of yet another mall, school or public shooting massacre. In the recent Omaha, Neb., mall shooting, the killer stated something to the effect of “I’m going to go out in style…at least I’ll be famous!”

Well, he was right. The media gave him exactly what he wanted: Fame. They printed his picture, stated his name, interviewed his family and friends and will talk about him for years to come.

I believe the media needs to be more responsible in its reporting. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in free speech, but enough is enough.

The media can still report on such an occurrence by simply stating an unnamed person went into such and such a place and committed this horrific act of violence. There is no need to print his or her name, show their face or give them any of what they were looking for — notoriety.
