If I could redo Federal Way, I would … | Letters

Federal Way Mirror editor Andy Hobbs asked on May 7 to spread your ideas for the city.

This prompts me to indulge in “One Big Imaginable If.”

I am an 80-year-old, 37-year resident of Federal Way. I am not a Federal Way complainer. I am a Federal Way thanker.

If in my imagination only, I could redo Federal Way:

1. I would put a Space Needle at South 288th Street and Pacific Highway South. It would rival Seattle’s.

2. I would put a Seattle Westlake Mall at Pacific Highway and South 320th Street. It would be the place for organizing protests, dignitaries, politicians, celebrations, marches, etc. I know of no piece of land that would be more accessible and transparent to the world.

3. I would put City Hall, police and the senior center on north Celebration Park, closer to town and seniors. The city center is a place for seniors, but a senior center is not.

4. I would build the 35- and 45-story high-rises to accommodate the Growth Management Act for more people. The only way is up. I see no high-rises in Bellevue or Seattle being torn down.

5. I would put a restaurant on the unused parking lot between the old Target and Toys R Us. It’s a beautiful view of Mt. Rainier and the city.

6. I would put a mile of beach road between Dash Point State Park and Redondo. Tacoma has Ruston Way and Seattle has Alki.

I don’t think this is what Andy Hobbs had in mind, but for whatever it’s worth …
