Homework and your children | Federal Way letters, March 17

I hope Susan Kovalik’s opinion (“Homework myths: Battling the worksheet blues,” March 14) will not provide excuses for our teachers not to give homework to their students.

It’s a myth that the students in the United States do more homework than students in India, Korea, Singapore, Japan, France or Germany. Just ask the immigrants from those countries. Locally, the children in Bellevue are doing better than ours in Federal Way, in WASL scores or in acceptance to a more prestigious institution upon graduation. And it’s not because they have less homework. My personal experience is they do more.

I don’t believe in too much homework, but a meaningful amount in addition to parent’s involvement — yes, even after a long day at work — go a long way in helping the young minds succeed. Kids aren’t just able to on day sit down to do serious homework in high school, when they didn’t have to do anything when they were younger.
