I wrote a letter to the editor several weeks ago about being flashed by a 20 mph school zone camera for exceeding the posted speed limit in front of Twin Lakes Elementary School.

I just recently witnessed another injustice done by the same camera that caught me.

The flashing lights and the flash camera kick in around 3:30 p.m. when the kids are getting out of school for the day. I was around five car lengths behind a mid-2000 red Toyota Corolla that was going eastbound on 320th at around 30 mph (legal when the lights are not flashing).

I learned my lesson from my previous infraction. I downshifted into second gear to slow down to 20 mph and, sure enough, I caught the lights starting to flash out of the corner of my eye. But, the red Corolla was already well into the school zone and was unaware of the flashing lights as it continued through at the suddenly illegal speed. The camera light flashed.

You would think that a municipality that can catch a speeder with a sophisticated flashing light and camera system, and then call the speeding citation a “parking violation,” could synchronize the system so that such things cannot happen. Red mid-2000 Toyota driver, I am your witness. You should not pay the $210.
