Ferrell: Debate is not about me | Federal Way letters

After reading Jerry Vaughn’s letter on Sept. 9, my initial reaction was defensive in nature. However, after further reflection, I came to the realization Jerry Vaughn is a passionate and zealous advocate, in defense of what he feels is right for Federal Way. While I disagree with Mr. Vaughn on much of the substance of his argument, I applaud the vigor he brings to the public discussion to determine the future of our city.

At the crux of his argument is the notion this debate is about my personal ambition. Nothing could be further from the truth. My ambition is for Federal Way to rise to its full potential under a system of government that is fully transparent, accountable and responsive to the people it serves. This debate is not about me. It is about the people of this community. For far too long, our citizens have been toiling in a system of government that does not serve them well. My aim is to lead the debate to create reform, which is long overdue.

In leading this debate on behalf of ACT (Accountability Comes To Town), I knew full well I would be the object of personal criticism. I accept the criticism, but ask one question in return. Isn’t it time we have our elected representatives state in full public view what they believe? I say it is. The people of our community deserve nothing less. I believe in the future of this city, and this change of government will better serve the citizens of Federal Way long after I, Jerry Vaughn and all other concerned citizens taking part in this debate are gone.

I invite and encourage the readers of this paper to join us in discussing Federal Way’s future. Together we will create a new day for Federal Way.

Jim Ferrell, Federal Way City Council member
