I totally agree with your April 4 editorial — that the City of Federal Way should retain management of the Knutzen Family Theatre.

I was already disturbed that our city officials would even consider a bid from the Centerstage Theatre group to take over the management of that facility. They’re a proven bad business model unable to pay their own debts, they bilk city taxpayers every year for bailouts.

I recommend the city only permit use of our capital facilities by successful groups that can demonstrate solvency. Just say no to freeloaders like Centerstage altogether. We the taxpayers and owners of the facilities deserve to see a profit from them, not a drain on our revenues.

Maybe with a group like Tacoma Musical Playhouse, the Knutzen could have been successful. We’ll never know now, due to the Centerstage’s obnoxious demeanor causing TMP to withdraw their competing bid to manage it.

Oh why? Why couldn’t the 30th District have legislators like the 33rd District’s? They delivered their piece of the state pork — half a million to Kent for building an events center. The ShoWare Center, wildly popular.

Whereas, our legislators decided we needed another performance art center with no popular demand for that beyond a few arts commission individuals. Our legislators, city officials and even staff are lobbied constantly by a rabid pack of arts aficionados. That impressed State Sen. Tracey Eide and State Reps. Skip Priest and Mark Miloscia, thus, they promised half a million dollars to study and make plans for another performance hall downtown. It seems every little burg and city in the state got a piece of the pork pie for similar projects from our Democrats that dictate the state budget. Thus, we’ve got a $9 billion budget deficit now being balanced by cuts from education, public safety and other essential state programs.

Let’s recoup some money by getting rid of the art projects and getting rid of our big-spending elected officials too when they’re next on the ballot. This is beyond ridiculous!

I’d like the city to just say no to Centerstage and to look out for the city’s citizens instead — we that foot the bills for the boondoggles.
