Village Green Retirement Campus, 35419 1st Ave. S., will receive the City of Federal Way’s 2010 Leadership in Recycling Award. The award recognizes local businesses that are increasing recycling, reducing waste and adopting sustainable practices.

The retirement campus, owned by Federal Way residents Monte and Diane Powell, does not use herbicides or pesticides on the property. Residents recycle and there is a food scrap composting program active in the dining areas and juice bars.

In the past year, Village Green has reduced its garbage volume and increased recycling. In 2009, roughly 30 percent of waste materials were recycled. Now, nearly 55 percent of materials are recycled.

Sparks Car Care, 32627 Pacific Highway S., was an honorable mention in the running for the award. Sparks has taken many measures to reduce waste and recycle materials, including used car parts and oil.
