Top Food and Drug will close in Federal Way.

Parent company Haggen Inc. announced Wednesday that the Federal Way store will close in four to six weeks.

Located at 31515 20th Ave. S., the Federal Way store employs 48 people. Haggen is working with the UFCW Local 21 and Bakers Local 9 unions to place the employees at other locations.

After 22 years in Federal Way, the store will close for financial reasons.

“Doing so will allow us to invest on other stores, and better position our company in today’s competitive marketplace,” said Clement Stevens, senior vice president of merchandising at Haggen, in a prepared statement.

Haggen is headquartered in Bellingham. The company operates 27 supermarkets in Washington and Oregon under the Top Food and Drug and Haggen Northwest Fresh names.

“At Haggen, we aim to continuously strengthen our business by evaluating the status and potential of our stores,” said John Turley, co-president and senior vice president of operations at Haggen, in a news release. “Choosing to close this location is difficult knowing the impact it will have on our committed employees and loyal customers. We appreciate the patronage of our Federal Way residents and hope they will consider shopping at a Haggen location in the future.”
