Ma Boulange Bakery making Federal Way ‘a bit sweeter’

Though it has only been open four months, Ma Boulange Bakery has found the Federal Way community open and welcoming, manager Tigran Mirzoyan said.

Federal Way stuck in Mirzoyan’s mind after a visit, so when the opportunity came to open a second bakery — in addition to Old Country Bakery in Bellevue — Federal Way was an easy choice, Mirzoyan said.

“What better place than a growing community?” Mirzoyan said.

The bakery opened on Feb. 15, after Mirzoyan noticed Federal Way was missing an established bakery, he said.

Organization is sometimes a challenge, but challenges make the final product all the more worth it, Mirzoyan said.

Mirzoyan got started baking in 2007, getting to know the owners of a bakery and helping out when needed. In 2008, the owners sold the bakery, and Mirzoyan convinced his parents to take over the operation, he said.

“I can’t think of a better business to be in,” Mirzoyan said.

Since Ma Boulange opened its doors in February, it has built up a customer base, though half the customers each day are still new faces, Mirzoyan said.

The bakery strives to make everything as naturally as possible, often by using recipes with fewer ingredients, Mirzoyan said. The bakery also makes smaller quantities of each goodie daily to keep everything fresh, Mirzoyan said.

Special order cakes for birthdays, showers and weddings are also available.

“We love doing birthday cakes,” Mirzoyan said. “It’s so joyful to make those.”

Most goodies use authentic cremes and frostings instead of imitations that are often too sweet, Mirzoyan said.

Mirzoyan is thankful for the Federal Way community that appreciates the bakery, he said. Human contact and connection, bringing people together, is one of the bakery’s goals, Mirzoyan said. Another is to provide tasty treats for all occasions.

“We’ll be there to make the person’s day a bit sweeter,” Mirzoyan said.

Ma Boulange is located at 1770 S. 320th St., next to Trader Joe’s. It is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week and offers a variety of baked goods and sandwiches.
