Goodwill store temporarily closed after fire damages building

A fire on May 21 caused about $20,000 worth of damage to the building.

The Goodwill thrift store in Federal Way remains temporarily closed after a recent fire near the building.

At about 2:30 a.m. May 21, South King Fire and Rescue crews responded to the 32521 block of Pacific Highway South in Federal Way.

The fire started in stacks of wood pallets behind the building, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said Assistant Chief Gordy Goodsell of South King Fire.

Approximately $20,000 worth of damage to the structure was caused by the fire, he added.

Fire crews forced entry into the building and found smoke on the side of the building, Goodwill said.

Smoke inside the building caused some damage to the Goodwill merchandise, said Chris Politakis, vice president of marketing at Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region.

Goodwill in Federal Way is temporarily closed, but Politakis said they are working to reopen in early June.
