Federal, State: Primary election results are in for Federal Way

Early ballot counts Tuesday night favor incumbents in Congressional District 9, which includes Federal Way, and Legislative District 30, which includes the cities of Federal Way, Algona and Pacific.

United States Representative

For Congressional District No. 9 US Representative, incumbent Democrat Adam Smith is in the lead with 50.94% of the votes, totaling 36,070.

Republican challenger Doug Basler currently holds 23.79% of the votes with 16,842 votes.

Behind the two frontrunners are Independent Kshama Sawant with 12.56%, Democrat Melissa Chaudhry with 11.42% and Socialist Workers Party candidate Jacob Perasso with 1.13%.

Along with Federal Way, District 9 includes Algona, Auburn, Beaux Arts, Bellevue, Des Moines, the majority of Kent, Mercer Island, Milton, Newcastle, Pacific, Renton, SeaTac, parts of southeast Seattle and Tukwila

State Senator

For Legislative District 30 State Senator, early returns on Tuesday night show incumbent Democrat Claire Wilson ahead with over half of the votes. Wilson has 61.43% of the vote — or approximately 7,476 votes.

Republican challenger – and the only other person on the ballot – Michael Rutland took home approximately 38.47% of the vote. Write-ins currently stand at 12, taking 0.10% of the votes. Total votes as of 8:03 p.m. on Tuesday are 12,169.

State Representative Position 1

For Legislative District 30 State Rep. Pos. 1, incumbent Jamila Taylor is set to face newcomer Tiffany Bowyer in the general election.

Tuesday’s primary election results update show incumbent Democrat Taylor received over 63.16% of the vote or 7,677 votes.

Newcomer Republican candidate Bowyer secured 36.66% of the vote, or 4,456 votes, as of Aug. 4.

Write-ins are currently at 22, making up 0.18% of the total vote. Vote total stands at 12,155.

State Representative Position 2

Democrat Kristine Reeves is set to face Independent Paul McDaniel for Legislative District 30 State Rep. Pos. 2 in the general election, according to early results.

Tuesday’s vote count shows Reeves garnered 63.33% of votes or about 7,598 votes, King County Election results show. McDaniel secured 36.08% of the vote, or about 4,328 votes.

Write-ins are currently at 71, making up 0.59% of the total vote. Vote total stands at 11,997.

Overall voter turnout stands at 18.14% as of 8:03 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 4

The election results are updated each day at 4:30 p.m. until they are certified on Aug. 18. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
