Groups as small as 10 people could qualify for funding for volunteering at the U.S. Women’s Triathlon held in Federal Way next month.
The swim-bike-run event takes place at Steel Lake Park on July 10 and 11. It’s the fifth time Federal Way has hosted the competition and is the second of a three-city nationwide series.
Groups may qualify for special monetary incentives, up to $300, depending on the size of the group.
Twenty volunteers are needed on pre-race day, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. About 200 volunteers are needed on race day, July 11, from 5:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will assist as course marshals, at the finish line, in the transition area, as swim buddies, or in post-race activities.
The majority of race participants for this event are from western Washington, with other competitors coming from Oregon, British Columbia, California, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C. They range in age from 14 to 70. Other 2010 cities on the circuit this year are Naperville, Illinois and San Diego, California.
A portion of all entry fees for the event support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Additional donations to the OCRF will be made for each volunteer who signs up. To date, the US Women’s Triathlon Series has raised more than $1 million for this cause. More information on the series is available at www.USWTS.com.
