Hazmat team treats apartment complex in Federal Way

South King Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 call at 5:35 p.m. Saturday over chemical odors at a Federal Way apartment complex.

A strong odor was causing respiratory irritation among residents at Azalea Gardens apartments, 30801 16th Place SW.

South King Fire technicians retrieved a sample of a substance, allowing a hazardous materials team to treat and decontaminate the residents and scene. More information is being sought on the over-the-counter substance that’s commonly found in pesticides.

King County Medic personnel treated and monitored 16 people at the scene, including two South King firefighters. Two children, one adult, and two firefighters were transported to local area hospitals for further monitoring, according to the fire department.
